Remember! There are three this week. Yes, yes, I know some of you find this stuff boring. Well, tough. It's a necessary scene, and sometimes in movies people need to have a conversation for more than a minute straight. This is the comics equivalent of that.

Don't forget: for every $250 the Kickstarter project raises above $8500, I'll be giving away a free copy of the Multiplex/Memento parody mini-poster and a set of five buttons to one lucky backer.

With the total pledges at just over $9507, that's 4 sets of posters and buttons to give away. If we reach $9750 by Friday, that'll be five sets — but if we reach $10,000, I'll give away ten sets.

Have returned from Sydney where I spent the last few days at the eResearch Australasia 2009 conference, a well attended gathering with almost five hundred of the country's senior IT/research managers present, although the suffix -asia is a bit of a misnomer. The conference was held opposite Manly Beach a site which is most quintessentially Australian and reminds me of Midnight Oil's Power and the Passion (original video clip available on YouTube). I wonder if Minister Garrett remembers saying "it's better to die on your feet than live on your knees ... sometimes you've got to take the hardest line?"). First day of the conference was spent at the annual ARCS all-hands meeting which could have been improved with earlier and more complete reporting from management on operational and strategic activities.

My paper, Social Networking and Weblog Sites for Researchers apparently went quite well; standing room only and people being very attentive and furiously writing notes during the presentation. I argued several points; that reducing the cost of replicated research is worth billions to the Australian economy, knowledge is proximal and networked, for researchers networking and 'blogging tools need to be combined (e.g., Livejournal/Dreamwidth), content moderation and public exposure is required, that content networks are more important than social networks (Flickr rather than Facebook) and that provision must be made to automatically assign researchers to content groups they require. The next step after this is convincing my managers that this is worth throwing some money at.

Microsoft attempted to make a big splash at the conference with the release "The Fourth Paradigm: Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery", a collection of some twenty extended abstracts of scientific research involving high quantities of data and using MS tools. The claim that there even is a fourth paradigm (science via empiricism, then theory, then simulation, then data) receives some significant criticism in the scholary communications chapter from Clifford Lynch and John Wilbanks, the former arguing that the third paradigm is far from complete and the latter arguing that this in no way represents a paradigm in the sense of Thomas Kuhn. To think I had to read almost the entire book to find these remarks. Whilst the research is vaguely interesting, the theoretical grounding of the text is very weak.

Tweet Me Harder Live, the first live on-stage comedy performance of Tweet Me Harder, the podcast I co-host with Kris Straub, is coming up this Saturday! A few details about the show:

We’ll be at The Complex, a theatre at 6476 Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood, CA. Parking is always dicey in Hollywood; you’re welcome to seek out street parking for a cheap option, but we will also have valet available (they charge $5). The performance itself is free and no tickets are required, though it would be nice if you’d RSVP on our Facebook event page so we have an idea of how many are coming.

The theatre lobby will be open starting at 7:30 pm; the theatre doors will open at 7:45, and the show will start at 8. It’ll probably run about an hour and a half, and please feel free to hang out afterwards to mingle!

I’m very, very excited about this show and I can’t wait to lunge gracelessly into the performance I MEAN ROCK THE HOUSE WITH COMEDY. See you on Saturday!

In all the posting schoolwork hubbub, I forgot about Comic Face for this month.

Hey everybody! A comic that I wrote and [info]tedprior drew is up on Top Shelf 2.0! You can read it here. You can also read the first E&A story here!

I have been neglecting this LJ since I finished the Month of Girls, but I have just finished Mungo Bean Book 2! It will be in our Etsy shop as of next week, and should be online fairly soon. It is a cracker!

Also, if you are in Perth, come down to the Made on the Left Markets this Saturday and buy some things! You don't have to buy them from us but I strongly recommend it.

Mr Giggles

We just adopted this little sweetheart and we’re already in love. As soon as we held him he purred like an engine, and we knew he had to be ours. He loves to be held and his current favorite toy is our fingers. We’re so excited to spend our lives with him.

Two of my 10 week old foster kittens! Very cuddly little guys, hopefully I can home them as a pair.

Augustus Gloop (Gus)

Location: Huntsville, Alabama, USA

Augustus Gloop (Gus)

Gus, along with his brother and two sisters, was found under a bush near my husband’s office. At the time, they were about four weeks old. I foster kittens for Challenger’s House, a local cat shelter, and so I am now fostering these four until they can be spayed and neutered and readied for adoption in six weeks or so. Gus is the only long-haired kitten of the bunch, and I like to say he’s the Kramer of the kitten world – his fur goes in all directions despite my attempts to keep it smoothed down.

Note: due to a scheduling error, the pictures of kittens posted yesterday and the day before had already been featured on the site. To make up for this, I’m posting three kittens today. I hope you like them.
